Commandant's House at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Restored to it's original splendor Angelica Redpath worked diligently for two years with the Brooklyn Historic Society, Brooklyn Building Department, Fire Department, wood workers, carpenters, electricians, HVAC contractors, plumbers, and gardeners to
rehabilitate the mansion.
Completed in 1981 The Federal-Style Architecture In New York City the Commandant's House at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Built early in the 19th century, the big white house, formally known as Quarters A, is the yard's oldest surviving structure, with exquisite Federal-style detailing.
The mansion is surrounded by a steep fenced drop-off into the old Navy Yard, a long seven-foot-high brick wall; and a high iron fence with a locked gate, the Great Gatsby style cast iron
double gate which opens automatically is the first view of this exquisite mansion. Matthew C. Perry was commandant for two years starting in 1841. The three-story house with its majestic gardens, high gates, and broad lawn offers a summer delight above the East River.
This Brooklyn, NYC, Federal Historical building known as the Commandant Mathew C. Perry House is a 19th-century gem a clapboard house four bays wide in front and five bays deep.
The facade rises to a peaked roof and a rooftop observation deck overlooking all four NYC bridges. The main doorway, on the right, was in an intricate Federal style with a fanlight. The cornice and roof trim also carried delicate detailing. The interior with Federal-style mantels, door casings, interior fanlights and an oval dining room with a secret passage way for the commandant's to escape.
