Bioenergy comes from biomass. Bioenergy is the conversion of chemical energy – which is stored in the biomass - into an industrially useful form, such as heat or electricity. Through bioenergy, we can produce electricity from biomass materials such as trees, grass cuttings, sugars and vegetables. However, the practical development of bioenergy is still relatively costly.

We believe there is a role for different types of alternative energy. There are several conventional and unconventional fuel sources that have the potential to provide future benefits:
How do renewable energy technologies compare?
"Green power" actually takes in a range of renewable energy technologies. The cost of gas-fired electricity is estimated at 3-4 cents per kilowatt-hour, coal at 2-6 cents and nuclear at 2-14 cents. The average home might use 12,000 kilowatt-hours per year.
Green power requires consumers to pay more for their power so it is sourced from renewable sources including wind and solar. In the past 12 months there has been a surge in public support for renewable power.

Solar electric
How it works: Arrays of photo voltaic cells convert solar rays to electricity.
Where it’s at: A must for folks who want to live “off the grid.” Thin-film technology and economies of scale are reducing the relatively high cost of manufacturing solar arrays.

Wind power
How it works: Wind currents turn turbines that generate electricity.
Where it’s at: Technological advances have made wind power competitive with fossil-fuel generation – if you have the right site for your turbine farm. Wind generates about 1 percent of America’s electricity, 15 percent of Denmark’s.
What it costs: 3 to 9 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Small hydro
How it works: Water currents turn turbines that generate electricity.
Where it’s at: Hydro produces 7 percent of America’s electrical power, but only 2,400 of the nation’s 80,000 dams are used for hydro. Small, environmentally sound facilities could help boost capacity.
What it costs: 5 to 12 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Fuel cell
How it works: Hydrogen and oxygen are combined to produce water and electricity.
Where it’s at: Stationary fuel cells can produce electricity for homes and businesses, but the infrastructure for hydrogen fuel still has to be developed. Today’s fuel-cell facilities still use carbon-containing fuel such as natural gas. What it costs: 8 to 15 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Biomass
How it works: Organic waste and vegetation, ranging from straw to landfill gas, short rotation coppice (Willow or poplar), miscanthus, switch grass, reed canary grass, prairie cord grass, rye grass, agricultural residues such as straw and chicken litter; and the by-products of forestry materials, such as those of saw-milling, including sawdust are burned to power turbines that produce electricity. Ethanol and "biodiesel" are produced for cars.
Where it’s at: Co-firing with conventional fuels is a low-risk, low-cost power solution.
What it costs: 3 to 9 cents per kilowatt-hour. Biomass can be used to produce electricity but is best when combined with the heat produced durign the process, known as combined heat and power (CHP).

Geothermal
How it works: Steam from beneath Earth’s surface turns turbines to produce electricity.
Where it’s at: Power generation is feasible only in certain areas, and environmental concerns limit its application. Heat pumps are used more widely for home heating and cooling. What it costs: 4 to 6 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Is Geothermal a Green Technology?
As stated by the EPA: geothermal heat pumps are the most energy efficient, environmentally clean, renewable and cost-effective space conditioner systems that are available. A solution of water and an FDA approved food based anti-freeze fills the loops and is continuously circulated by a very small, low wattage pump.
Did you know...
About 6 million people in the U.S. get their household energy through geothermal technology? Half of these, about 3 million, receive electricity from geothermal power plants, and the other half use geothermal heat pumps to provide their heating and cooling needs.

Wave power
How it works: Coastal waves compress air in chambers, powering turbines to generate electricity. Deep currents can also turn the turbines.
Where it’s at: Several companies are pursuing projects, but can the expensive-to-build facilities stand up to rough seas? What it costs: 4 to 9 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Instead of dispersing the chemical components of water (hydrogen and oxygen) through electricity, direct current is produced and water is obtained in the form of steam.
